St. Michael Monument in Kyiv to be Replaced

Archbishop Pavlo (Lebid), superior of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, demands that the monument to St. Michael at Kyiv’s Independence Square be taken down because of its variance from rules of sculpture and Orthodox canons.

Kyiv Assistant Mayor Vitalii Zhuravskyi assured that the issue of replacing the monument will be resolved. ua.for-ua.com posted the story on 30 July 2007.

“Today’s Archangel Michael does not correspond to the biblical image. An angel should be bright,” said the archbishop.

According to Zhuravskyi, in the nearest future a competition will be announced for the new monument project.
